Kat Farrell

she/her/they/them

Art has always been my portal to a different dimension, a different world. As a child, I always felt the strong impulse to make or create, even if I wasn’t particularly proud of it. I use my art as an expression of my inner demons and creatures. The mind and heart are powerful tools that drive my every thought, emotion, and action; they guide me in everything I do. Growing up, I did not know about mental illnesses, but have since learned that I’ve lived my life with depression, anxiety, and trauma. I would find that the only remedy for my mental chaos was delving into my mind and creating visual stories through drawings. A plethora of sketches and doodles strewn across the pages of my notebook, representing countless times that I would drift away from reality and into my happy place.

I’ve grown fond of working primarily in traditional medias such as ink, watercolor, and gouache. I’ve gained a lot of influence from my experience as a tattoo apprentice for two years, causing my work to have a graphic and bold illustrative appearance. My work will often encompass themes that include mental illness, feminism, and my experience as a queer woman of color. Other medias I’ve worked with include: embroidery, printmaking, and digital paintings.
